Title
Medieval brooch (possibly)
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy object of uncertain function, possibly a brooch dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1000-1200). The object is disc-shaped with a raised hemispherical central boss. The upper surface is decorated with a moulded circular and geometric pattern. The four concentric ring and dot motifs, one roughly in each quarter of the plate, consist of a single grooved circle, another circle within it and a circular dot at the centre. The zones between the two circular grooves are flat and plan. Around the base of the central boss is a border consisting of small and slightly raised sub-circular knops. Approximately ten of these knops survive but a number of others are now barely visible due to wear. The areas between the central boss and ring and dot motifs are decorated with a repeating geometric pattern of right-angled grooves.

The reverse of the plate is flat and undecorated. There is a circular recession at the centre and above this a sub-circular scar – possibly where there was a previous attachment.

The surfaces if the object have mottled light to mid0brown patination that has laminated slightly on the reverse.

The scar on the reverse suggests that this object might have been used as a brooch. It is broadly similar to those of Weetch Type 23 but these lack the angled decoration of this example.

The object measures 30mm in diameter, 4mm thick at the boss, 1mm thick at the plate and weighs approximately 6 grams.
