Title
Medieval brass
Description
English: A fragment of a copper alloy possible monumental or church brass dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1200-1500. The fragment is sub rectangular in shape, and is seperated into three different sections. The first section is decorated with longitudal ridges, it is possible these were originally to hold enamel in place. The second section has two raised arches, with the longitudal ridges on the inside and outside. In between the two arches there is corrosion, this may be the remains of enamel. Only a small part of the third section remains, and is a repeat of the first section. There is a raised border in between the sections, and along one edge. This most likely is the originally edge of the brass. It is possible that the original brass would have been shield shaped, and inlaid into a funerary or other monument. There is no decoration or fittings on the reverse. It has a mid green patina, with patches of lighter green and brown in the recesses. It measures 48.2mm in length, 38.6mm in width, 3.3mm in thickness and weighs 27.72g.
