Title
Medieval barrel padlock fragment
Description
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy barb-spring padlock of medieval to early post-medieval date. Numerous examples of this category of artefact have been found in excavations at Winchester, and Goodall suggests a 12th to 16th century date (Biddle ed., 1990, p. 1001).

The piece represents the damaged bolt and spring part of the mechanism. The central part of the bolt consists of a rectangular arm of thin section. At the top, this arm terminates in a circular aperture, into which the hasp would have fitted. The bottom part is wider and of circular section and has remnants of the two-pronged spring extending from the back face.

The object measures 26.4mm high, 8mm wide and 15.3mm deep. The weight is 4.74g.
