Title |
Medieval barrel padlock case |
||
Description |
English: Medieval barrel padlock case in the form of a horse, ears, muzzle and one leg missing, the others incomplete. Transverse ribbed mouldings on the back and around the front of the neck indicate the saddle and harness, the mane depicted by obliquely engraved lines. A triple bolt aperture at the rump end and part of the key aperture at the breast both survive. A vertical hole behind the head at the top of the neck would have held an arm or tab from which a horizontal bar would have engaged with a bolt collar at the other end. A very similar object was recovered from a 12th- to early 13th-century context in Winchester (Goodall in Biddle 1990, fig. 313 no. 3665, with other parallels and discussion). Another was found in Seething (HER 40302). Length >38mm. Height >29mm. Width 12mm. |
