Title
Medieval barrel padlock
Description
English: A Medieval iron barrel padlock case of Goodall's Type D (in Biddle, 1990), with a hinged shackle, locked and corroded in place. The spring and bolt are enclosed within the case. Barrel padlocks with shackles (Type D) were intended to secure human or animal limbs (Goodall 1990 p.1001). Examples from Winchester date from the late 10th to early 15th century.

The case is cylindrical and c.30mm in cross-section, widening to c.40mm diameter at the open end. The shackle (c.10.5mm diameter cross-section) is hinged at one end (to a projection from the case) and curves in an arc to the opposite end of the case, where it is locked in place within the padlock mechanism. The dimensions of the padlock are 95.92x106.05x40.34mm and it weighs 321g.
