Title
Medieval barrel padlock
Description
English:

A medieval barrel padlock. A cast copper alloy barrel padlock case of 12th or 13th century date. The case is a short sub trapezoidal shape with a broad, flat, upright arm extending from the top at one end, attached to a narrow, tapering bar of circular cross-section which extends back over the whole length of the case. The bar is damaged and bent to a 45 degree angle. Both sides and the top of the padlock have double lines of opposed punched triangle decorations. The case has three rectangular entrance holes at one end, suggesting the padlock had three spring mechanisms. The end plate entrance hole is sub- rectangular with the edges of the copper case bending inwards over the hole. The size of this padlock suggests that it was probably intended for use on a small casket or chest. The other part of the padlock which would be locked in place is missing, as are the sprung parts. Compare Egan 'The Medieval Household' (pp. 91-99, nos. 242-245).
