Title
Medieval barrel padlock
Description
English: Incomplete Medieval copper alloy cylindrical padlock case, missing almost all of an oval-sectioned bolt. It measures 27.1mm in length and weighs 9.58g.

The case is square or rectangular in section, but in shape rectangular with a circular bulge in the centre, measuring 27.1x14.3mm. It is decorated on the outside face with five lines of zig zag lines, the central much shorter than the other four, the outer two of which vaguely follow the curved outline of the case. On both sides of the case a transverse rib occurs at either end of the central circular bulge.

The rectangular-sectioned arm extends below and to one edn of the case. It measures c.12x7mm and has a 2.4mm diameter piercing close to the case.

The bolt extends from the other end of the arm to the side. It is oval in section at the break (3.2x2.4mm).

Two identical padlocks from North Lincolnshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire hasve been recorded on the PAS database, NLM-570551 and LVPL-512F17 respectively. Similar examples have been found in excavations at Winchester and the style fits with Goodall's type C. 12th-15th century in date.
