Medieval barrel padlock |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete Medieval barrel padlock case in the form of a horse. The stubs of two legs are present, but a large piece of the underside and flank along with most of the ends are missing. Little of the key or bolt apertures survives. The missing part of the underside and flank probably lay within the cavity for sometime, to judge from verdigris stained soil therein. Moulded details include the horse's ears (now mostly missing), the mane and the harness and saddle. On the analogy of a very similar example from a 12th to early 13th-century context in Winchester (Goodall in Biddle 1990, fig. 313 no. 3665) the bolt aperture was at the rump end. A longitudinal socket through the head may have held a separate bar that would have engaged with a collar at the top of the bolt arm. The socket, though, is not parallel with the remainder of the object, being angled upwards towards the rump. Length 39mm. Height >28mm. 12th - 13th century. |
