Title
Medieval barrel padlock
Description
English: A late Medieval copper-alloy barb-spring padlock also known as a barrel padlock (15th-16th century). This is a Type C padlock with an L-shaped arm (Biddle 1990:1010). The case is faceted to form an octagon in section. The lower three facets are decorated with a curved line with stamped squares closely spaced along both sides; the curved line extends between two stamped transverse lines. Part of the case is missing, revealing the internal double-leaf spring. The padlock has an L-shaped arm with a perforation at the base and a looped L-shaped bolt with a perforation and two parallel spines, each with a double spring. Biddle (1990:1002) states the perforations were probably for the attachment of chains to hold the various parts together. It is very similar to no. 3667 found in Winchester and dated 15th-?16th century (Biddle 1990:1011-2, fig. 313). The case has a pale green patina, the L-shaped bolt has a dark grey patina (?different alloy)
