Title
Medieval barrel padlock: Horse-shaped padlock
Description
English:

A complete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic barrel padlock dating to the medieval period. The object is a barb-spring (barrel) padlock case dating from the 12th to mid 13th century AD. The padlock is zoomorphic, in the form of a stylised horse, based on other examples and rather than a dog. The body of the animal, which accommodated the barb-spring mechanism, is hollow and roughly oval in cross-section. The fore legs bend forwards slightly and are larger than the rear legs. The hollow head projects forwards and slightly downwards with a circular mouth and short upright ears. There is a hole in the back of the head. The muzzle of the animal is deocrated simply with multiple incised transverse grooves. This is the only deocration on the animal. The bolt and hasp are missing. A similar example can be seen in Bailey 1997: 43, no. 4 and another parallel for this padlock was found in excavations in Winchester (see Biddle 1990: 1011, fig. 313, ref: 3665). The suggested date range is 12th to early 13th century, though barrel padlocks were used from the 12th to 16th century. Such padlocks would probably have served to secure small caskets.

Similar padlocks have been recorded on The Portable Antiquities Scheme database.
