Title
Medieval barrel padlock, 12th to early 13th century
Description
English: Cast copper alloy Medieval barrel padlock (12th - early 13th century). The padlock has a moulded zoomorphic case in the shape of a horse. This was cast in one piece. At the rear of the horse there are three rectangular holes for the bolt. In the chest of the horse is the circular hole for the key to be inserted. There is a perforation lengthways through the horse's head, beginning at the mouth and ending at the back of the head, possibly where the arm fitted. Two unven holes in one side of the body of the horse are probably the result of damage. The head is worn and does not bear much similarity to a horse's head. However the neck is long and thick and there are transverse grooves across the body and neck which possibly represent a harness.

The horse has four small projecting legs. The horse appears to be in motion as the two front legs are projecting forwards. The padlock has a mid-dark green patina. Most of the horse is covered by a light green corrosion product.

Dimensions: length: 39.9mm; height 29.62mm; width (diameter of the barrel) 12.66mm; weight: 10.9g. A padlock of this size and decoration would have been used to secure items of furniture such as chests and caskets. Another similar example has been recorded on the PAS database (BERK-F6BF18).
