Title |
Medieval barb and spring padlock case |
||
Description |
English: The incomplete copper-alloy case of a barb and spring (barrel) padlock. Measuring 41.15mm in length and 9.67mm in thickness. The hollow case has a hexagonal cross-section and both sides of the case are decorated with longitudinal decorative bands of zigzags. The remains of the integral bolt consists of a vertical rectangular part, with a circular hole through its centre, which would have held the tip of the now missing hasp in place. The case also has projections from either end of its underside.
Similar barrel padlocks have been discovered at Winchester and dated to the medieval period, c15th century (Biddle 1990, 1010-1012, fig 313, no 3666, 3667). |
