Title
Medieval annular brooch
Description
English: A complete, copper alloy annular brooch, dating to the medieval period (c. AD 1200-1400).

The brooch has a circular frame and is approximately D-shaped in section. The face of the brooch is divided into eight moulded sections, alternating larger and smaller. The larger four sections appear to have had a granulated or cross-hatched design, although this is very worn and can now only be seen in small sections close to the edges. The four smaller sections are undecorated.

Cast into the outer edge of the brooch is a deep lateral groove running around the circumference of the circular frame. The reverse or base of the brooch is slightly concave leading towards the centre hole, but otherwise is flat and undecorated.

The pin is circular in section with a flat collar closest to the attachment and tapering towards the point. There is a small bend in the pin, which is probably post-depositional. The pin constriction is narrow and divides one of the larger four sections in the centre.

There are traces of gilding on the face and reverse of the brooch, in addition to the outer edges.

Weight: 3.43g, overall diameter: 17.26mm, thickness (depth): 3.38mm. Internal diameter: 8.18mm, band thickness: 4.05mm, total pin length: 16.80mm.
