Title
medieval annular brooch
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy medieval annular brooch or buckle with pin, dating to c. 1350-1400. The frame is circular, with the inside edge bevelled, but otherwise is undecorated. The frame is sub-oval in cross-section. The frame is recessed in one place forming a pin constriction in which the pin is hinged, and so is technically a brooch rather than a buckle (see Egan and Pritchard 1991, 64-5).

The pin is a sheet of copper alloy wrapped round the frame, and narrows towards the terminal end. On the reverse there is a semi-circular notch either side of the pin; if the pin hinge is at 3 o'clock, the notches are at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. The notches are similar to those found on the reverse of disc-on-pin buckles. The brooch is a red-brown colour, and has patches of green patina. The brooch measures 22.5mm in diameter, 5.2mm in thickness, and weighs 4.33g.

A similar brooch is shown in Egan and Pritchard 1991, 249, no. 1307, found in a late 14th-century context.
