Title
Medieval annular brooch
Description
English: A complete cast copper-alloy Medieval annular brooch dating to the period AD 1200-1400. The frame is broadly D-shape in cross-section with a flat base. The upper surface has moulded decoration in the form of four equally spaced zoomorphic heads in two pairs. The heads of each pair face one another, with the pin constriction between one pair and the pin rest between the other. Each head is slightly raised above the level of the frame. They are all broadly rectangular with two triangular projections as ears, two transverse ribs as eyes and a raised rounded ridge as a snout. Two circular apertures, one between each pair of heads either side, perforating the frame may once have held gemstones. The underside of the frame is undecorated. Attached to the pin constriction is a thin circular-sectioned pin with an integral loop and pointed terminal that rests on the pin rest on the opposite side of the frame. It is bent inwards approximately halfway along its length.

The surface of the frame has mid-brown patination while the pin is light green and may be a later replacement of the original.

The brooch measures 30.87mm in external diameter and is a maximum of 4.25mm wide and 9.95mm thick. The pin is 28.5mm long and 0.7mm in diameter. The entire brooch weighs 5.60 grams.

Several similar zoomorphic brooches are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, all of which are dated from the 13th to 15th centuries. These include NLM-833913, NARC-396E37 and SOMDOR1121.
