A greatimprovement actually took place — better men were placed inoffice and many practices which had formerly irritated the peoplewere permanently abolished. Among those who, during the final sessions of the Council,sturdily opposed every attempt to reduce in any way the exaltedpower of the pope, was the head of a new religious societywhich was becoming the most powerful Catholic organization inEurope. The Jesuit order, or Society of Jesus, was founded by aSpaniard, Ignatius Loyola. He had been a soldier in his youngerdays, and while bravely fighting for his king, Charles V, hadbeen wounded by a cannon ball (15 21). Obliged to lie inactivefor weeks, he occupied his time in reading the lives of the saintsand became filled with a burning ambition to emulate theirdeeds.
