Title |
Medieval ampulla |
||
Description |
English: An almost complete lead-alloy pilgrim's ampulla of medieval date (c.AD 1350-1550).
The body of the ampulla is circular with an elongated rectangular neck extending from one edge. Where the neck meets the body are two curved attachment loops, one on either side and flattened against the neck. One loop is complete, the other partial. The opening at the top of the neck has been pinched shut. On the surface of one face of the body is a scallop shell design of repeated flared incised grooves extending from the narrowed waist to the lower edge. On the other surface is a circle with a raised border with several central spokes. The metal has a light brown / yellow patina and is worn. The ampulla is 67mm long, 25mm wide, 6mm thick and weighs 52.3g. Ampullae were an important pilgrim souvenir known to have been in use from the late 12th century and were designed to contain a dose of thaumaturgic water, which would have been given to pilgrims at holy shrines and wells. The water would be taken as a cure to illness or disability or worn as a talisman. The popularity of ampulla dwindled in the early 14th century, giving way to pilgrim badges, however it is believed that they continued in use to the end of the 15th century. Similar but not identical records include LVPL-4FFBB2 and GLO-3D1EF8. |
