| Description |
English: An incomplete lead alloy medieval ampulla, dating from 1350-1530. The ampulla has a rounded chamber, which narrows at the neck then widens to the opening, this part is trapezoidal in shape. The centre of the ampulla has been pressed together, both on the rounded chamber and at the opening. The two sides at the opening end are pressed together and creased slightly. On both sides at the opening edge there are sub circular indentations as if to seal the ampulla. Either side of the neck are worn breaks where the suspension loops or side-lugs attached. The ampulla is decorated bifacially, on one side on the lower chamber is a crown and a large fleur de lis rising from the centre of the crown. On the other side is a scallop shell, with a above it. At the bottom of the scallop decoration is small indentation, with an oval hole in. There is a crack running off it. The ampulla is a white grey colour, and is covered in yellowy white corrosion. The ampulla measures 46.1mm in length, 27.9mm in width, and 6.8mm in thickness. It weighs 24.54g.
The scallop shell decoration is the badge of St James of Compostela, and also the symbol for pilgrimage as scallop shells were used as badges. Spencer 1990, page 59. This ampulla was found near to another, BUC- 4D6F33. |
