Title
Medieval ampulla
Description
English: An incomplete lead alloy medieval ampulla, dating from 1350-1530 AD. The ampulla has a rounded chamber, which narrows at the neck then widens to the opening, this part is trapezoidal in shape. The centre of the ampulla has been pressed together. The two sides at the opening end are pressed together and creased slightly. Either side of the neck is a suspension loop or side-lug, one of which is broken into two separate projections. The break is worn. The ampulla is decorated bifacially, on one side on the lower chamber is a crown is raised lines, and on the other is a scallop shell. The side decorated with the crown has a large crack running from the centre of the opening edge, down to the side-lug on the left edge. An oval shaped hole is in the centre, the edges of the break are worn. The ampulla is a white grey colour, and is covered in yellowy white corrosion. The ampulla measures 46.6mm in length, 32.1mm in width, 4.5mm in thickness and weighs 24.74g.

The scallop shell decoration is the badge of St James of Compostela, and also the symbol for pilgrimage as scallop shells were used as badges. Spencer 1990, page 59.

The ampulla was found near to another similar one, BUC-4DD52F.
