Title
Medieval ampulla
Description
English: An incomplete cast Medieval lead ampulla, probably dating to c. AD 1350-1550. Only the neck of the vessel survives. This is broadly rectangular in shape and narrows slightly above the handles either side. The upper edge is intact but has been closed or crimped. Below the handles the body widens into the only partially surviving upper section of the bowl. One side of the ampulla has several faint lines and grooves extending across the neck that may be damage or decoration, but below this there are several angled grooves indicating that the missing bowl would have been decorated with a scallop shell. The other side of the ampulla appears to be undecorated though it is very worn and abraded. All surfaces of the ampulla have a light grey/cream coloured patina.

The ampulla measures 25.68mm long, 34.06mm wide and 7.87mm thick. It weighs 16.82 grams.
