Title |
Medieval ampulla, originally attached to PUBLIC-3B23AD |
||
Description |
English: Lead ampulla that has a circular chamber and long rectangular neck, flanking the neck are two angled handles, these handles still retain some of the casting flash around the outside and completely filling the inside. The circular chamber is decorated on one side with a Lombardic T surmounted with a large crown. On opposite side is a fleur-de-lis, interrupted by a transverse casting seam; this is surrounded by a ring and pellet border. Running around the other edge of the chamber is a band of double opposing triangles. Length 54 mm, width 33 mm, thickness 11 mm, weight 46.5g.
The presence of the letter T strongly suggests that such pieces originate from the Canterbury shrine of Thomas Becket. Furthermore, the star pattern was used on pilgrim badges of Thomas Becket, suggesting that the star had acquired some special significance in the Becket story (Spencer, 1998, 109) Similar ampullae, bearing a similar crowned letter 'T', are recorded on the PAS database (see LIN-54BE9D, BH-9CB614, LIN-25E422, HESH-8CE9E4, HAMP-204F64, LANCUM-521C00, LANCUM-ED91E5 and LANCUM-77A960). The combination of this with the fleur-de-lis is categorised by Anderson as his type II.30 (see Anderson 2010, 191; fig. 3c for an illustration). |
