Title
Medieval Zoomorphic Buckle
Description
English: A complete and corroded buckle of Medieval date, probably thirteenth or fourteenth century (AD 1200 – AD 1400). Length: 22.2mm; width: 17.2mm and 9.0mm thick. Weigh: 4.71g.

The frame is sub-oval in plan and has an off-set bar. The outside edge, which is bevelled on the underside, is enlarged to form a zoomorphic head with a prominent nose. Other facial features are indistinct. The bar has a length of 7.5mm and is sub-rectangular in cross-section (2.9mm x 1.9mm). The pin, made of a thick strip of copper alloy, fully encloses the loop and the shaft tapers throughout its length towards a blunt tip.

This buckle is corroded and has active bronze disease. Traces of a drab khaki green patina survive.
