Title |
Medieval Vessel |
||
Description |
English: Medieval copper alloy vessel, probably a chrismatory: narrowed neck with slightly thickened rim, two integral opposed looped handles globular body and rounded base. A hole in the base may have been repaired: there are signs of silvery probable solder on the exterior. There are two otner, smaller holes through the wall. Diameter 31mm. Height 38mm.
At least twelve other examples of these vessels have been recorded in Norfolk, from Bacton (HER 1073), Blo Norton (HER 21118, SF10638), Great Dunham (HER 45424), Hellington (HER 34929), Hockering (HER 36541), Long Stratton (HER 16111), Marsham (HER 39717, NMS-C4D7E8), East Ruston (HER 16764), Norton Subcourse (HER 36159), Whinburgh and Westfield (three vessels, two from HER 40298; and one from HER 49806) and Whissonsett (HER 55991). The Marsham example carries two inscribed crosses. Suffolk examples on the PAS include Holbrook (SF-4470), Nacton (NMS-582720) Little Blakenham (SF-877F80), St Margaret, Ilketshall (NMS-367774) and Whepstead (SF-CFDD82). One has been recorded from Stambourne, Essex (PAS SF8334) and another from St Goran, Cornwall (PAS CORN-79D1C4). Others are known from London. A similar example inscribed: OLEVM CHRISM (chrism oil) was found recently in East Clandon, Surrey (SUR-FA2ABO; Medieval Archaeol. 48, (2004), 244-5, fig. 4 a). This example presumably came from a travelling set of vessels containing the three holy oils used in the medieval church: oleum infirmorum for the sick; oleum catechumenorum for baptism; and chrisma or balm, used for confirmation, ordination and certain consecrations. The Clandon piece was tentatively dated to before c.1200, but it may be safer to accept a wider time-span. The simple form may have continued until the Reformation. |
