Title |
Medieval Type C Barrel Padlock (profiles, base and reverse) |
||
Description |
English: The object is a cast copper alloy barrel padlock case and integral bar. The bar has a sub-oval shaped section, which gradually tapers to a blunt point. The upper face, of the wide terminal of the bar is decorated with six parallel grooves across the bar. Protruding from the underside of the wide terminal of the bar, is an off-set arm. The arm is at right-angles to the bar, is rectangular in section and plan. Protruding from the lower edge of the bar is the case for the padlock. The case is positioned so that the key aperture terminal is in line with the wide terminal of the arm. The case is a square sectioned tube. The key aperture in profile is a square hole. The underside of the case, at this terminal has a ‘T’ shaped slot to allow manoeuvrability of the key. The opposite terminal of the case, is the mechanism aperture. The lower edge of the mechanism aperture has a shallow lip, but the upper edge is damaged and incomplete. The sides and underside of the case are decorated with a series of fine chevrons. The surface of the padlock case has a light grey/green patina. The object measures 53.86mm long across the arm, 27.77mm wide from the arm to the lower edge of the case and 12.59mm thick across the case. It weighs 19.65g. This is a Type C barrel padlock, and according to Goodall (in Biddle, M. 1990 Object and Economy in Medieval Winchester Vol. II Clarendon Press, Oxford) these types were in use during the 12th to 16th centuries. |
