Title
Medieval Toilet Article. Drawing: Frank Basford
Description
English: A complete silver-gilt toilet article of Medieval, fourteenth century date (AD 1300 - AD 1400). Length (if straightened) 68.0mm. Weight 3.14g. Treasure case no. 2006 T623. The implement, probably an ear-scoop, has a spatulated end and a twisted shank. The scoop is elongated with a length of 22.0mm and a width of 5.0mm. The shank is of sub-rectangular section rod, 26.0mm in length, and has five S-twists. At the terminal end the spatula is leaf shaped with a length of 20.0mm and a width of 3.6mm. The rear face of the spatula has several oblique linear inscribed marks which appear to be accidental damage rather than of intentional design. Although the implement is bent from its original alignment and the majority of the gilding has worn off, it is in good condition. Similar toilet implements have been published. See G Egan and F Pritchard, Dress Accessories, London 1991, 379, fig. 251, nos. 1758-1760. See also Treasure Annual Report 2002, 97, no. 115. An ear scoop recovered from archaeological excavations at Cuckoo Lane Southampton is also similar but slightly larger (Platt and Coleman-Smith 1975, 269-70, fig. 246, ref. 1901).
