Title
Medieval Steelyard Weight (fragment)
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper alloy casing of a Medieval steelyard weight (c. AD 1250 – c. AD 1400). Length: 42.omm; width: 31.3mm and 15.1mm thick. Weight: 25.69g.

The casing is thin walled and has a maximum thickness of 1.8mm. It is largely straight when viewed from the side but curves down abruptly at one side. The outer face has an integral parallel sided perforated suspension lug which is sub-triangular in plan when viewed from the side. The perforation is circular and has a maximum diameter of 7.0mm. The lug has a number of fine striations which might have been created as a result of fettling. All the edges are in the form of old breaks. Although, the core of this weight was probably composed of lead or a lead alloy, there is no indication of any metallic material on the inner face.

The surfaces are generally covered with a mid-green patina. However, some superficial corrosion is present.

Examples of complete lead-filled copper alloy steelyard weights are illustrated in Saunders and Saunders 1991. 'Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue', 48, fig 13, refs. 1 and 2.

Similar parallels can be seen in Ward Perkins 1940. 'London Museum Medieval Catalogue'. 170-174. These weights are dated to the Medieval period, 1250-1400.
