Title |
Medieval Steelyard Weight |
||
Description |
English: Upper part of a medieval copper alloy steelyard weight of Ward Perkins 1940 Class I, the lead core missing. Below the almost flat top there is a band of engraved decoration: two circumferential grooves flank a running zig-zag, which divides triangles containing three horizontal grooves above from those containing two oblique grooves below. Above the jagged break there are the upper parts of three shields in relief. Two depict what was probably a fleur-de-lis, while the other is barry, three bars remaining. No other example of the use of such devices on steelyard weights has been noted. The arms displayed do not vary (Ward Perkins 1940, 172), though one fragment may be related (SF-A4B342, from Babergh, Suffolk). However, the form and the nature of the engraved frieze on this present example and on the Suffolk piece are very similar to others of Class I. Diameter 54mm. Extant height 41mm. c.1250 - c.1300. |
