Title
Medieval Scabbard Chape
Description
English: A decorated Medieval copper alloy scabbard chape (c. 1100-c. 1200).

Length 40mm, width 29mm and 9mm thick. Weight 7.92g.

The object is folded to form an L-shape so when viewed from each side it has the same appearance. One of the upright parts, which is flat on the inner side, appears to be complete and is decorated with four oblique moulded ribs above which is a bulbous moulding flanked on either side by a horizontal rib. The end is flattened and slightly splayed and incorporates a circular hole, about 1.5mm in diameter. The remains of a rivet is intact within the hole. At the extreme end beyond the hole is a narrow V-shaped notch. The other arm is identical, except that the splayed end to accommodate the rivet hole is broken and missing. The break appears to be old. A similar sized rivet hole and rivet are situated at the corner of the two parts forming the L-shape. The lower, horizontal part of the object, is decorated with punch marks to form a regular wavy line with dot and tendril design. This decoration is enclosed by an upper and lower moulded groove.

The object has an even mid-green patina and is in a stable condition.
