Title
Medieval Scabbard Chape
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy scabbard chape of Medieval, thirteenth century date (AD 1200 - AD 1300). Length: 38.7mm; width: 24.1mm and 6.1mm thick. Weight: 5.16g. The chape is made of a piece of cast copper alloy sheet which has been bent to form a double plate. Most of the back plate is missing due to an old horizontal break. The plates were probably of equal size. The surviving plate is trapezoidal in plan and has a small 'U'-shaped notch at the centre of the top edge. The top edge is 21.2mm in width, the lower edge is 15.1mm in width and each side has a length of about 15.5mm. At one of the corners on the top edge is an integral upward projecting arm terminating in a point. Close to this pointed end there is a flat-headed rivet. There would have, originally, been four of these arms with rivets, one at each corner. These four elements enabled the chape to be attached by rivets to the scabbard. The surviving plate is decorated at the front and this is composed of small triangular punch-marks forming oblique, linear and curvilinear lines. The piece has a dark green patina, some of which has been lost. The breaks are old and abraded.
