Title
Medieval Pilgrim Badge
Description
English: Lead pilgrim badge, depicting St Anne teaching the Virgin Mary to read. Possibly from her shrine at Buxton, Derbyshire, but relics of St Anne were also claimed by Canterbury, Reading and Durham, and so it may alternatively have been produced at one of these places. This badge appears to be broken off at the point where the arms cross, as a similar example from London shows the figures at full length (Spencer 1998, no. 196c). The cult of St Anne was especially strong in the 15th century, and this badge can be dated to then. Pin remains at back.
