Title
Medieval Papal Bulla of Pope Urban III (probably) (front, reverse)
Description
English: An incomplete lead papal bulla, probably of Urban III (1185-1187) or Urban IV (1216-1264). Mass: 10.2g; length: 31.2mm; width: 20.1; thickness: 4.2mm. The fragment, almost half of a papal bulla, is sub-semi-circular, with the straighter edge being a break. The papal bulla has a brown/off-white surface, which covers the break. Therefore the break does not appear to be recent. On the front of the papal bulla there is an (incomplete) inscription which reads: U[]/BA[]/P[] over three lines, with a pellet border around the curved edge. On the reverse of the papal bulla is the head of Saint Peter within a partial pellet border, with a pellet border around the curved edge and an (incomplete) inscription which reads: [](S)PE. Papal bullae of Urban III and Urban IV have been recorded on the PAS database (e.g. see WMID-C81864 and SWYOR-E12A00). These have a similar arrangement of letters on the left hand side of the front, but it is unclear which Pope Urban is referred to on the bulla recorded here.
