Title |
Medieval Padlock |
||
Description |
English: Two fragments of a copper alloy medieval padlock dating to c.1200-1270 AD.
The larger fragment consists of the barrel of the padlock, and is a hollow cyclindrical tube which is circular in section and narrows slightly towards one end. The two sides of the tube don't meet and there is a gap running along one side. At the narrower end the arm projects, which is sub rectangular in shape and has a circular pierced hole in the centre which is full of corrosion. Below this on the body of the barrel is an irregular worn hole. Above the arm and parallel to the barrel runs the bolt bar, which projects over the end of the arm and barrel on one side. The other edge is worn and broken, and measures 30.8mm in length. The fragment has a dark green patina, and measures 38.1mm in length, 24.6mm in height, and 10.2mm in width. The fragment weighs 9.66g. The smaller piece is part of the end plate component from the barrel padlock. The main body is cyclindrical in shape and solid, with a forked internal projection which narrows towards the terminal end, at which there are possibly two worn breaks. The tab projects from the main body at right angles to the fork, and is pierced with a circular hole. Above this is the bolt collar or sheath. This piece measures 29.9mm in length, 7.8mm in width and 23.7mm in height. It weighs 6.13g. Similar padlock components can be seen in Egan 1998, pages 91-97. |
