Title
Medieval Padlock
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy padlock of Medieval date preserving the endcap only, the remainder missing due to old breaks. It is circular in shape with relatively tall walls and a hollow/concave back face. From one side are two integrally cast copper alloy projections. One is cylindrical in form with traces of possible iron corrosion, the second is rectangular with a possible iron centre that has much iron corrosion. To one side of the front face is a semi-circular shaped perforation, presumably a bolt aperture or key slot. The front face also carries decoration in the form of 11 ring and dot motifs that are unevenly spaced around the face. The hollow back face has a rectangular iron bar that runs transversely from behind the rectangular projection on the front/side but does not pierce the opposite side of the end cap. This too has extensive iron corrosion. The entire object measures 23.54mm in diameter, 10.05mm in thickness, and weighs 15.32g. This is the endcap from a Medieval padlock, possibly from the key end, although it is equally possible that it is from the bolt end. This would have been attached to a barrel padlock similar to those published from Medieval London (Egan, 1998: pp. 91-99) and Winchester (Biddle, 1990: pp. 1008-1015). These indicate a date range of between the 12th and 15th centuries for the current example.
