Title |
Medieval Lipped Oval Buckle |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy oval, lipped buckle frame with offset bar and plate. The frame is of thin metal. The large lipped outer edge has cast decoration of ridges and grooves in a curvilnear design, possibly zoomorphic. The bar is offset and rectangular in section. The attached plate is recessed for the frame and has a pin notch in the centre. The notch and the two recessed tabs are irregular. The front plate is rectangular and recessed for inlaid possibly enamel or niello decoration. The design is geometric. There is a symmetrical pattern on the long axis of curving shapes. There are two rivet holes at the distal end. One retains the stub of an iron rivet. The back plate is shorter and undecorated. It also tapers slightly to the distal end where there are broken notches. These are the remains of the rivet holes. |
