Title
Medieval Hollow ended strap end reverse
Description
English: Medieval, hollow ended strap end. Cast in one piece, this strap end is sub rectangular in plan and section. It is 37.66mm long, 21.07mm wide, 6.24mm broad (remembering that it is hollow) and weighs 14.08g. To the end opposite the mouth of the strap end, are the remains of what would have been an integrally cast, decorative extension consisting of openwork scrolls etc. This has clearly been damaged, and only one circular frame of openwork exists, extending from a recessed neck that continues from the main body of the object. The remains of this openwork are clearly worn smooth, suggesting that the break and damage occurred sometime in antiquity.

The main body of the strap end is decorated with an incised design. This takes the form of a rectangular border, with three horizontal incised lines beneath. Towards the top of the border is a horizontal line that essentially creates an inner border, within which are housed the fitting holes and surviving copper alloy rivets. Within the main body of the bordered section is an incised design, which is hard to discern, but may be zoomorphic. The rear of the strap end is flat and plain.

The over all patina of the object is mid green with some patches of lighter green corrosion. These strap ends are often referred to as ‘lyre shaped’ due to the nature of the decorative extension. They came into fashion at the end of the 14th century and continued to remain so for the whole of the 15th.
