Medieval Furniture Fitting
Description
English: Incomplete medieval gilt copper alloy bar mount, from a box or casket, or possibly harness. One end is lobed and with a double cusp and an attachment hole(as Griffiths, N. in Clark 1995, fig. 52 no. 73). The mainpart is of flattened C-section (i.e convex front and hollow reverse). At the other end, after a transverse rib, the object flattens and widens before a break which truncates two probable attachment holes. Specks of gilding remain on the front face. Cf. an example from Berwick-on-Tweed (NCL-3631D4). Extant length 54mm. Width at centre 7mm, at break 16mm. Thickness 3mm. 13th - 14th century.
