Medieval Finger Ring |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy medieval finger ring with engraved decoration. The circular ring is formed from a band of continuous thickness (measuring around 1.30mm) and there is no shoulder or bezel. It is wider on the side where the decoration is located, measuring 11.6mm at the widest point and 6.24mm at its thinnest. The front of the ring is decorated with a niello-inlaid cross pattee. The rest of the decoration is lightly engraved onto the surface. It consists of a four-arched tressure (formed from small dots) around the cross pattee, flanked by two vertical lines of tight zigzags. On each side of this is a side view of a three-petalled flower (again formed from small dots). The decoration covers exactly half of the ring's hoop; the remaining half is blank, as is the interior, with the exception of the indentation of the cross pattee. No close parallel has been found, but this finger ring possibly dates from the 12th century (pers. comm. Geoff Egan). |
