Title
Medieval Ewer Lid
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy lid from a ewer of Medieval, fifteenth century date (c. AD 1450 – c. AD 1500). Length: 54.4mm; width: 52.3mm; thickness: 52.1mm; weight: 134.91g. The object is hexagonal plan and cross-section throughout its entire length and is hollow on the underside, except at the periphery where it is flat. It rises in three distinct stages and is surmounted by a pointed finial. Two neighbouring facets of the middle stage have partially illegible stamped inscriptions, one is crowned. To the right of the inscribed facets, the middle and lower stages has a scar indicating the former presence of a thumb-piece.

The outer face of the lid has a shiny dark green patina with some small deposits of iron corrosion, the larger of these being on the lower stage. The underside has a similar patina although the surface is coarse. There are file marks on the flat periphery on the underside.

Lewis (1987), ‘Finds Research Group 700-1700: Datasheet 7’, 5, fig. 8c) dates this faceted form as late fifteenth century.

A pewter lid from a vessel, classified as a flagon, is octagonal rather than hexagonal in cross-section. This vessel, found in the River Medway near Tonbridge Castle, Kent has been dated late fourteenth century (Hornsby, et. al. 1989. ‘Pewter: A Celebration of the Craft 1200-1700’, 52, no. 12).
