Title
Medieval Ewer (spout)
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy ewer spout, probably of 15th century date
The zoomorphic ewer spout is in the form of a dog's head with the spout protruding from the open mouth. The spout is complete (with an overall length of 62mm and a weight of 54.0g) and would have been soldered to the body of the ewer at the curved and convex oval opening (with external dimensions: 45.0mm long and 16.4mm wide). The dog has oval and upright ears, concave across their widths. The snout is represented by a concave depression and there is a prominent ridge across the dog's brow. The dog's eyes are dot defined. The spout has straight sides converging slightly towards the end (protruding 6.4mm - 13.8mm from the dog's mouth, with an internal diameter of 7.1mm and 11mm external). The surface has a dark-green patina and is heavily-pitted.

A similar ewer spout depicting a dog's head and dated to the 15th century was recovered from the moat of Cardiff Castle (Lewis, 1991) .
