Title |
Medieval Ewer (leg) |
||
Description |
English: A cast-copper leg from a ewer (water jug), of Medieval date (c. 1300-c. 1500). This leg is one of three that would have been integral with the base of the vessel. The inside face of the leg is flat and the outside face is faceted to form an irregular pentagonal cross-section. Immediately above the foot there is a prominent horizontal ridge. The foot projects forward and has a rounded terminal. The break is old and file marks cover the entire inside face. It has a dull matt green patina overall. 56.0 x 16.3 x 13.9mm. Weight: 50.24g. This ewer foot dates from the 14th or 15th century. The vessel would have been used to hold water for hand-washing (Lewis 1987). |
