Title
Medieval Ewer
Description
English: A cast-copper leg from a ewer (water jug), of Medieval date (1300-1500). It measures 66.16x13.24x17.40mm and weighs 64.69g.

The leg is one of three that would have been integral with the base of the vessel. The inside face of the leg is flat and the outside face is faceted to form a pentagonal cross-section. The front of the leg is flattened along its central arise.

Immediately above the foot there is a prominent horizontal ridge. The foot projects forward and is pentagonal in cross-section on the underside (measuring 22.78x13.21x12.59mm). The top of the foot slopes to the edges either side of a flattened central arise.

The break is old and parts of the vessel wall are visible to either side. This ewer foot dates from the 14th or 15th century. The vessel would have been used to hold water for hand-washing (Lewis 1987).
