Title
Medieval Copper Alloy Oval Buckle
Description
English: Oval Medieval buckle with composite plates

The object is a complete, oval Medieval (c. AD1350-1450) copper-alloy buckle frame with composite plates.

It comprises an oval frame with outer edges measuring 19.44mm wide by 17.88mm; its internal dimensions are 15.25mm wide by 10.62mm. A pointed pin rest lies at the centre of the frame's outer edge. The pin measures 13.93mm in length before bending back on itself to form an attachment to the forked spacer that is covered by the composite plates. The frame has a sub-triangular cross-section; the pin has a circular cross-section and rounded terminals.

Details of the integral forked spacer are unknown due to the complete nature of the artefact. From their attachment to the frame the plates taper outwards from 13.92mm to 14.58mm wide by 29.03mm, with the narrowest edge closest to the buckle frame. The 4.63mm thick plates are held in place by two rivets with slightly raised heads. The rivets have a length of 4.03mm and are spaced 9.90mm apart. The rivets have a diameter of 1.9mm. In between the rivets is a circular, decorative aperture measuring 2.99mm in diameter; the edge of the upper plate is incomplete. To either side of the aperture is a u-shaped cut to give a crenellated edge.

Total Dimensions: length: 46.91mm, width: 19.44mm at its widest, its weight is 9.42g.

Egan & Pritchard comment, 'These buckles with their distinctive composite plates seem to have been a widespread mid 14th to early 15th century form in this country' (1991; p.80). Cf. Egan & Pritchard 1991 figs.48 and 49, nos.332-330.
