Title |
Medieval Buckle : D shaped loop (rear) |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a Medieval, cast, copper alloy buckle. The fragment comes from the curved side of a single loop D-shaped buckle with narrowed and offset strap bar c1250-1500. The frame is flat backed, with a rounded front, and a lip on the outer edge. The frame increases in width towards the centre. The lip shows hints of a single row of decorative dots. The fragment has a dark green patina.
Similar examples can be seen in Whitehead (page 19 - Cat No 59-64) who suggests a medieval date c. 1250-1500. It is possible that this fragment might be from a later buckle as only a fragment survives. However the form and patina both suggest a medieval date. Length of fragment 14.1mm, width of fragment 26.3mm, thickness 2.6mm, weight of fragment 1.62g. |
