Title
Medieval Buckle
Description
English: Incomplete medieval enamelled copper-alloy Limoges-style rectangular buckle plate, broken across the twin loops formed by frame recesses and pin slot, most of loops and backplate missing. Two copper alloy rivets at the attachment edge. Surviving length 27.5mm. Width 22.5mm. 2.5mm thick.

The elaborate enamelled decoration comprises a wyvern to dexter reguardant. The rather canine head of the wyvern is of purplish enamel. The body is filled with blue enamel with a border of white enamel on the lower edge. The wings of the creature contain red and green enamel and the legs red enamel. The non-enamelled surface, probably originally gilded, is now very corroded. The distinctive style of enamelling with a coloured field bordered in white, indicates a probable product of Limoges. Cf. Enamels of Limoges 1100-1350 (New York 1996). Late 12th - early 13th century.
