Title |
Medieval Buckle |
||
Description |
English: Large medieval silver buckle of lyre form and buckle plate, now in two parts. The plate retains its pin. The buckle was originally soldered to the plate, but has now broken off. The hollow plate which retained the end of the strap has two rivets and is decorated with a fleur de lys within a frame on a cross-hatched ground. Traces of the strap survive within the plate. The pin is intact within the hinge and is bevelled, tapering to the point. The buckle frame is decorated with a series of eight squares containing crosses against a cross-hatched ground, all within a border in which are what may be traces of niello.
For a comparable copper-alloy lyre-shaped buckle, see TAR 2008 No 340 (PAS: SUR-8B6461). The buckle and plate date to the fifteenth century. |
