Title |
Medieval Bird Feeder |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast lead vessel, probably a bird cage feeder of later Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is missing the rim due to old, jagged, breaks and is slightly flattened due to post-depositional damage. The vessel is D-shaped in plan with flat base and back face and rounded front face. It expands slightly towards the now incomplete rim, whcih has extensive damage probably as a result of agricultural activity. There appears to be no evidence of decoration. It measures 46.12mm in height, 59.34mm in width, 22.72mm in depth/thickness at base, and weighs 162.05g.
This is probably an undecorated lead bird feeder similar to examples recorded through the PAS (e.g. IOW-9AEDE6, NARC-5C78F2 or SOM-E343C1) and from London (Egan, 2005: no. 617). These are date broadly to the later Medieval and early Post-Medieval periods, c.1400-1600 AD and were perhaps utilised as containers for seed or water in bird cages, althoguh alternative uses have been suggested. |
