Title |
Medieval Barrel Padlock |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval barrel padlock dating from about 1250-1450. Its chamber is a hollow cylinder which is roughly hexagonal in section, with each side decorated with a pair of parallel grooves running horizontally along the length of the chamber.There is an elongated hole on one side of the chamber. Along the top edge of the chamber two flat upright arms extend, one from each end. The inside edges are slightly concave and continue along the top edge of the barrel meeting in a sharp peak in the centre. Each arm is perforated with a circular hole.They terminate with a short tube running across the end of the arm. The missing bolt would slot though these tubes. The under side of the padlock chamber has a rectangular aperture which runs 3/4 of its length; this has broken edges and is much wider than it would have been originally. A wider slot at one end is where the slide key would have been inserted. The remaining part of the chamber is enclosed by a square lug projecting from the underside of the barrel. The chamber is open at this end where the bolt and barbs would have slotted into the barrel. The hole is sub-circular but divided inside by a vertical slat down the centre. The opposite end is enclosed and has a tri-lobed extension on the underside edge next to the key hole. The object has a medium-dark green patina. Similar padlocks of the period may be seen at PAS record IDs: SF-908C58, NCL-904170 and SUR-EAAD05.
