Title |
Medieval Barrel Padlock |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete medieval copper alloy barrel zoomorphic padlock. The hollow cast body is in the form of a horse with four complete legs, the front ones being slightly longer than the back ones. At the back of the horse are three rectangular apertures and the front has a large asymmetrical opening, all for the missing bolt. The horse has cast and engraved details including ears, a saddle, headpiece but the face is quite worn. Cf. a slightly less elaborate incomplete example from a 12th-early 13th century context in Winchester (Biddle, 1990) no.3665 and other Norfolk finds, from Besthorpe (HER 33184), Billingford (HER 7206) and Seething (HER 40302). Another example, from Awarton, Suffolk, was considered Romano-British (Martin et al. Proc. Suffolk. Inst. Archaeol. 38 (1996), fig. 98 A, with reference to one more from the villa at Rockbourne, Hants). |
