Title |
Medieval Barrel Padlock |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval barrel padlock. The plain case is sub-rectangular and has an integral smaller rectangular moulding along three-quarters of the underside of the case. One sub-rectangular end plate has three sub-rectangular holes, top at the top and one below (3.9x5.0mm) for the missing bolt. The casing has split down the side of one of the top holes, making the hole incomplete. The opposite end plate has an incomplete T-shaped key aperture (9.9x6.4mm) as the underside of the aperture is missing. The L-shaped arm is now bent down towards the padlock case and has a sub-oval aperture. This type with the L-shaped arm has been classified by Goodall as Type C and is dated from 12th century to 16th century (in Biddle, 1990, 1001). The length of the padlock is 35.2mm, the width is 26.8m, the thickness is 27.2mm and the weight is 17.22g. |
