Title
Medieval Barb-Spring Padlock
Description
English: A Medieval cast copper-alloy bolt and spring mechanism from a barb-spring padlock (c. 1200-c. 1500). This object consists of an 'L'-shaped arm with conical base which has a depth of 5.7mm and a maximum diameter of 9.4mm. At one side of the base area pair of parallel rectangular springs. These are rectangular in cross-section, taper slightly towards the ends where each has a small circular aperture. On the opposite side of the base there is a short burred lug that secures a separate swivelling circular loop. At one side of the base, 90° to the springs, there is a flat rectangular plate terminating in a cylindrical feature with a circular aperture which has an internal diameter of 4.4mm. On its outer side there is a small burred lug similar to the aforementioned lug which also, presumably, secured another swivelling loop.

This artefact has a dark green patina which is obscured in places by off white/ buff deposits. There are numerous file marks.
40.1 x 30.3 x 9.4mm. Weight: 8.50g.
The mechanism is similar to those from Type C barrel padlocks from Winchester (Biddle 1991: refs: 3665-3668).

A similar bolt and spring mechanism has been recorded from Lakenheath Parish, Suffolk. See, Portable Antiquities Scheme find: SF-BF1DC4.
